Life is all about choices we make!!
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Moving from a cosmopolitan Dubai to a small English town, I often wonder about the choices we all make, and how different our journeys become. Every choice we make impacts us in the long run, this could be as simple as choosing what to eat, what to wear or what to study.
A friend of mine left the highly coveted Gynaecology and choose to become a pathologist. Had she stayed, would she have been able to deal with the pressures of the stressful residency and become a famous gynaecologist! The answer to this could be either ways, but she had a choice and she choose wisely considering her situation in real time and not on a fictitious future.
Sometimes, I look at girls in abusive relationships and wonder why they choose to stay. They do have a choice to leave, yet they are never able to forge the courage to choose that other path! And they keep staying.
Last week, we celebrated our 18th anniversary. Being so far, we were both sort of frustrated. Someone in my department asked me “How you survived 18 years? You are like a dream couple” I couldn’t help smiling at that but the truth remains about the choices. Every marriage goes through trials and tribulations, whithers rain and storms. Some choose to leave the fort, we put in hard work and stayed. Isn’t that the only difference!
We have plenty of choices these days and hence it is more important to choose wisely. Some of the wiser choices which we can make each day are
- Choosing an active lifestyle – This need not be a gym for everyone. Simple and easy walking each day.
- Not spending too much time browsing through mobile phones, and using that time for more constructive purposes.
- Choosing to spend time with people who bring out the best in us.
- Choosing our friends wisely.
- Choosing the right decisions for our career.
- Choosing to eat healthy.
The list is endless. Yet, these are the choices which make difference.
